"Begone with your gender stereotyping"
Mar. 27th, 2010 03:34 pmTo celebrate the fact that
lgbtfest (a multi-fandom fest that focuses on the experience of being lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender) prompts are open for claiming, I've pulled together a few recs for my favourite fic that deals with transition or gender identity.
Bright as the Rain in the Palm of Your Hand by
inlovewithnight (Brothers & Sisters, PG-13, Kevin Walker/OMC and ensemble, ~5000 words (estimate))
Summary: It's a package deal.
This is one of my favourite fics in any fandom. The writing is gorgeous, the original character is fully realised, the fledgling relationship is the right amount of tentative, and the characterisation across a large ensemble is outstanding. (Note: The title of this post is a quote from this fic.)
The Pattern of All The Process by
raedbard (West Wing, R, Huck Wyatt-Ziegler/OMC and Wyatt-Ziegler family, ~19,000 words)
Summary: At the Emergency Room the doctor calls Huck your brother. Molly doesn't bother to correct him, neither does dad, not at first anyway, though she does wonder -- not for the first time -- why, with her short hair and dungarees, she never gets mistaken for a boy anymore. A transition story.
Raedbard's writing style is utterly beautiful but he mainly writes Toby/Sam, which isn't my cup of tea. This fic, however, is one of my favourite in the fandom. It's set decades after the show finished, when one of Toby and Andy's twins transitions. It's poignant and smoky with moments of hotness and tenderness, and an acute understanding of family relationships in all of their messiness. Sorkin writes a lot about the relationships between fathers and sons, both biological and constructed, and Raedbard sees him and raises him a million.
Esther's Tale by Jadelennox (BtVS, PG, OMC, 860 words)
Summary: All told, my parents are turning our house into a little gay- friendly mecca. But we never talk about it outright. They want me to come out to them, I bet. Which I won't, because I'm not gay. Really, I'm not.
A sweet one-shot about how the Scythe just knows.
Rest Stop (I Knew You When Remix) by Kyuuketsukirui (Supernatural, Dean and Sam, PG, 1145 words)
Summary: Maybe it's not fair to have this conversation now when Dean can't even get up by himself, but Sam doesn't care.
I haven't seen Supernatural yet, but
nwhepcat sucked me in with her SPN/BtVS crossover Exiles. This is a one-shot that accurately conveys how much a sibling's words can sting, or soothe.
Nicky by Evan Nicholas (CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, R, Nicky Stokes/Gil Grissom, ~49,000 words)
Summary: Nothing is ever that simple with him.
Uneven this, but there's something engaging about its handling of the challenges of coming out to yourself, and to colleagues, and the sweetness of finding solidarity when everything is in flux.
