Yeah, I went back and forward on Spike's motivation and what would be the worst thing he could say / do.
I think that objectively for Xander, it's bad that no one with a shred of responsibility knows what's going on at home. However, I'm also hypothesising that Spike's relationship with his mother leaves him with an acute sense of the humiliation Xander might be feeling and that this lines up sufficiently with his essential laziness and desire to continue watching TV in Xander's basement to make him want to slightly reassure Xander. However, I entirely take your point and it's probable that my penchant for H/C has tainted my thinking on this.
